Industry-Specific Benchmarks and Employee Engagement

If you are seeking industry-specific benchmarks for your employee survey, you probably already understand that benchmark data are important, but you may not fully appreciate why and how benchmarks are critical.

In our research, we have found that there is little or no difference in benchmark data across industries. Even within "extreme" examples, such as when comparing manufacturing, retail, government, and office-based (white-collar) organizations, the dynamics and drivers of engagement are essentially the same.

The importance of benchmarking on an employee engagement survey has very little to do with the types of organizations (industry, size, etc) that the benchmarks are based on. The things that motivate and engage people do not differ based on what industry they work in or what company they work for. The basic concepts of fairness, respect, trust, teamwork, and other things measured in an engagement survey are more universal.

To put it another way, imagine if you quit your job today and went to work at another company in a different industry. Would your expectations about how you want to be treated as an employee and as a person be different just because you are now working in a different industry?
